I recently stumbled upon a post from a former HR friend who absolutely despises the idea of pets in the workplace. Her reasons include allergens, dander, poop, and urine. (Yes, HR can be glamorous like that, of course.) Legitimate concerns, of course—but also a perfect excuse for her to avoid meeting the puspins patrolling my consultancy’s office like furry little overlords.

As someone currently doing HR consulting for a company with two puspins, I’ve seen firsthand how they provide comfort and joy simply through their presence. They nap on chairs or underneath tables, greet employees and visitors, and their calming energy brightens the day for staff.

Similarly, in Mandaluyong, WCC’s resident office cats have won the hearts of tenants and employees alike.

Globally, Japanese companies adopt cats in the workplace to help employees manage stress. In New York and Hong Kong, bodega cats and shop pets enhance their environments without disruption.

Locally, startups like Kalibrr welcome dogs such as beagles and shih tzus, and companies like Google Philippines and TaskUs host therapy dogs and office pups to boost morale. These examples show that, with thoughtful management, pets—including dogs—can integrate successfully into professional settings.

Why Pets Matter in the Workplace

Across offices and worksites in the Philippines, pets have become much more than cute companions—they lift moods, reduce stress, and foster connection:

  • Stress relief: Cats and dogs can create calm pockets in otherwise hectic office environments.

  • Culture and camaraderie: Having pets around encourages small interactions that strengthen team bonds.

  • Employee satisfaction: Staff in pet-friendly offices often report feeling happier and more focused at work.

With clear boundaries and thoughtful management, pets can become a welcome part of workplace culture rather than a disruption.

Addressing Legitimate Concerns

It’s natural for employees to worry about allergies, cleanliness, or even phobias. Many companies have successfully addressed these issues with structured policies:

  • Pet-free zones and rules: Protect employees with allergies or fears by designating specific areas.

  • Responsible ownership: Pet owners are accountable for cleanup, behavior, and liability waivers.

  • Inclusive policies: Balance pet perks with comfort for those who prefer no furry coworkers.

Practical Implementation

Introducing pets to an office works best when done gradually. Here are key steps for success:

  • Allow only vaccinated, calm animals after an initial trial period.

  • Create dedicated zones stocked with cleaning supplies.

  • Gather feedback during pilot programs to fine-tune policies.

  • Appoint dedicated pet carers instead of relying solely on the janitorial staff, assign volunteers or employees to care for the pets—including, yes, handling the occasional poop. This ensures animals are properly looked after while keeping workspaces clean and fair for all staff.

Smart Alternatives

If bringing pets on-site isn’t feasible, there are ways to harness the benefits of animals without having them physically present:

  • CSR and community engagement: Partner with animal shelters, support Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Release programs, or adopt symbolic mascots like IBEX Global Solutions’ Philippine eagle, Xebi, to foster pride and connection.

  • Remote or virtual options: Offer pet insurance, allow work-from-home for vet visits, or host virtual pet-sharing days.

  • Community-building: Launch internal pet photo channels or organize volunteer events and adoption drives to create shared experiences.

Closing Thoughts

In short, pets in the workplace aren’t just adorable—they reduce stress, build culture, and make Monday mornings a little less miserable. Of course, rules and hygiene plans are necessary—but who doesn’t need a dash of fluffy chaos at work?

So, here’s a question for fellow HR practitioners: If your office suddenly adopted a cat, dog, or even a particularly charming iguana, would you be the first to volunteer for cuddle duty… or hide under your desk hoping it doesn’t notice you?
