The Crucial HR Reminder: Always Provide Clear Status Updates to Job Applicants

As HR practitioners, we hold significant responsibility in shaping the candidate's experience and employer's brand. Yet, a recurring concern many Filipino job applicants face—and I acknowledge as an HR professional, sometimes even I have been guilty—is the lack of timely and clear communication, especially regarding their application status.

Why It Matters

Imagine reaching the final stages of an interview, possibly even meeting the owner or CEO, only to be left in limbo afterward. Without feedback or status updates, candidates are left anxious, confused, and sometimes disrespected. Some even experience gaslighting—being made to doubt their own understanding of the process through dismissive or contradictory responses. This not only harms our reputation as HR practitioners but also damages the trust and morale of deserving applicants.

The Impact on HR and Company Reputation

Many candidates express their frustration on social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and to a certain degree, Reddit. These platforms have become outlets where applicants share their experiences, often forming negative impressions not just of HR practitioners but of the company as a whole. Poor communication and lack of follow-up reflect badly on the entire organization’s professionalism and culture. While it is understandable that HR professionals often juggle heavy workloads and competing priorities, this does not excuse neglecting timely and respectful communication with candidates.

Negative Effects on Applicants

  • Emotional distress and doubt: Waiting without feedback leads to uncertainty and self-questioning.

  • Loss of trust: Silence or vague replies damage the credibility of the company.

  • Wasted time and resources: Without closure, applicants struggle to plan their next steps.

As HR Practitioners, We Can Change This

We must commit to transparent and respectful communication throughout the recruitment process. This means:

  • Giving candidates clear timelines and sticking to them.

  • Providing honest status updates, even if the news is unfavorable.

  • Addressing queries promptly and with empathy.

  • Upholding professionalism at every step, treating candidates as valued individuals.

A Personal Reflection

I admit there are times when delays and busy schedules have interfered with my follow-up responsibilities. But knowing the impact on applicants—many from the Filipino community who work hard and hope for fairness—strengthens my resolve to improve. No one should be left in the dark or feel manipulated during their job search.

Final Thoughts

\If you are an HR practitioner, please take this as a sincere reminder: consistently updating candidates about their application status is a simple yet powerful act of respect that fosters goodwill and positive employer branding. Let’s ensure that no Filipino applicant, or any candidate, has to endure anxiety or frustration because of communication gaps in our processes.
