Job hunting is a process that requires patience, effort, and resilience. But sometimes, it feels less like an opportunity and more like an endurance test. I recently went through a hiring process that left me completely drained—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.

The Never-Ending Interviews

Like most job seekers, I was excited when I got the initial call. The company seemed promising, and I was eager to explore the opportunity. But what started as a hopeful application soon turned into an exhausting marathon of interviews, assessments, and waiting games.

At first, I told myself, "This is normal. Companies need to be thorough. But as the interviews piled up, I began to wonder—was this really necessary?

I lost count of how many times I had to prove my skills, repeat my experiences, and answer variations of the same questions. Each round felt like I was getting closer, only to realize there was another step.

The Psychological Toll of Candidate Fatigue

Candidate fatigue is real, and it’s more than just frustration. It’s the mental exhaustion from repeatedly investing time and effort into a process with no clear end in sight. It’s the self-doubt creeping in when you start questioning if you’re even the right fit, despite initially being confident. It’s the anxiety of waiting for feedback that may never come.

By the time I reached the final stages, I wasn’t excited anymore—I was just tired. Instead of feeling accomplished, I felt like I had wasted weeks of my life. And in the end? No offer.

A Lesson for Job Seekers and Employers

For job seekers: Know your limits. A rigorous process is expected, but if it drags on excessively with no transparency, it’s okay to step away. Your time and energy are valuable.

For employers: A long hiring process doesn’t always mean a better hire. When candidates feel exhausted, they disengage. The best talent won’t wait forever—they’ll move on to companies that respect their time.

Moving Forward

This experience taught me to be more selective with the companies I engage with. If a process feels unnecessarily long or draining, I now recognize the red flags. Job searching should be challenging, but it shouldn’t feel like a battle of endurance.
